Kelly held onto her friends lifeless body as the paramedics came rushing through the house to them in the backyard. Kelly had called them almost 5 minutes ago; she was getting frantic with worry. Tears slid down her cheeks as she stepped away from her friend.
“What happened to her?” Asked one of the paramedics as he took Katie’s pulse.
“I don’t know we were talking and then she just fainted, she’s pregnant,” Kelly sobbed.
“We’ll have to be extra careful then,” One said almost to himself. “Has she been taking care of herself? Eating well getting enough sleep?” He asked looking up at Kelly seriously
“I don’t know,” Kelly said biting her lip “I just arrived today, her boyfriend told me that she hasn’t
been herself and she’s been staying up all night.”
“We have to get her to the hospital,” The said as they placed her gently on the stretcher, quickly they wheeled her out of the house and into the street. Kelly quickly grabbed her purse as she climbed into the back of the ambulance.
She held onto Kelly’s hand as she brushed back her hair, she heard her groan through the oxygen mask. She moved her head but didn’t open her eyes. Kelly quickly let go of her friends hand and took her cell phone out of her purse. Daniel and Robert needed to know. She flipped it open as she dialed Robert’s number. It went straight to voice mail.
“Damn it Robert,” She cursed at the phone, as she frowned. “You need to turn on your damn phone.” She closed her eyes as she tried to remember Daniel’s number. Kelly closed her phone as Katie groaned again, she sighed “Daniel Robert, where are you guys?”
“Kira would you like a French fry?” Robert laughed as he held one just out of her reach.
“Robert don’t you dare,” Daniel said seriously.
“I wouldn’t dare,” Robert said casually popping the French fry in his mouth.
They quietly sat in a booth at a McDonalds, in the heart of London. It was about two o’clock in the afternoon, and the wind was getting stronger. They took refuge in the McDonalds as they casually ate their lunch. Daniel held a bottle up to Kira as he chewed on a French fry, he knew they should be heading back soon; Katie wouldn’t want her baby out all day.
“Should we head back soon?” Robert asked checking his watch for the time “It’s getting late and we’re at least and hours walk from your house.”
“Yeah, let’s finish lunch then we can wrap Kira up in the blankets we packed then we can head home.” Daniel smiled as he took a sip of his drink “I’m sure the girls are wondering where we are.”
“Yeah,” Robert said flipping open his cell phone as he turned it on “No messages from them, I hope they are doing okay.” He turned off his phone once again as he glanced at Daniel who was slowly eating his burger.
“I’m sure they are,” Daniel said feeling for his cell phone to check his messages “Oh shit,” He said
quietly “I left my cell phone in the bed room, I hope if they called they didn’t leave a message on it.”
“Don’t worry,” Robert smiled “If something was wrong they would’ve left a message on mine.”
“Why do I get this feeling that something’s wrong?” Daniel asked frowning as he put a baby blanket over
Kira. “Something is just unsettling.”
“I’m sure it’s nothing,” Robert said getting up, throwing away his trash.
“I hope your right,” Daniel sighed as he placed another blanket lightly on top of his daughter to keep her warm. “But still we should get home.”
Daniel stood up and threw his trash away as Robert slipped on his jacket “I’ll push the carriage,” Robert said zipping up the jacket to his chin.
“Thanks,” Daniel said zipping up his jacket as they entered the cold London air.
“So Daniel,” Robert said as casually as he could make it “When we get back to your place are you going to
have a nice long chat with Katie?” Robert heard Daniel breath out slowly.
“Do I have a choice?” Daniel asked sarcastically “I know I should talk to her, but I don’t think badgering
her right now is the right choice. And badgering me won’t do any good either,” He snapped at Robert, as he
rolled his eyes and looked away.
“Woah mate calm down,” Robert said calmly as they walked across a cross walk. “I don’t mean to badger you,
it’s just--” He paused for a minute.
“Just what?” Daniel asked.
“Well, I just want to make sure that you and Katie turn out okay,” Robert said as he stopped walking and
looked at his friend seriously “All of us rushed into these relationships, and I’ve been worried about
Kelly and my relationship before. Now it’s time for me to be worried about Katie and you. Especially since you two moved way faster than Kelly and I.”
“Way faster?” Daniel questioned cocking his head slightly to the side.
“Well having a baby,” Robert frowned “Not that Kelly and I didn’t have the scare of being pregnant, it
just seems you two moved a little faster.”
“At least I’m not the one who stalked at girl before I talked to her,” Daniel snapped glaring at Robert.
“Don’t you,” Robert started.
“Look I don’t want to get into this with you,” Daniel said holding up his hand quieting Robert. “We’ve had our arguments about this before, let’s not start it again okay?”
“Fine,” Robert said as they started their walk back to Daniel’s house. “Look mate I didn’t mean to tick you off about that.” Robert said after a few moments of silence “it’s just that Kelly and I want you and Katie to get through this, and if you two can’t talk about it, well then there doesn’t seem to be any hope.”
“I know you mean well,” Daniel sighed as he watched his breath appear before him “But like I said before badgering me won’t help me and Katie out. We need to figure all of this out. She needs to come out and tell me what’s bothering her; I can’t just demand that she tell me.” He reasoned.
“I know,” Robert said as he stopped at a cross walk, he tightened the blankets around baby Kira as Daniel pulled her hood down. “You know,” Robert smiled as they walked across the street “if people didn’t know better I bet they’d assume she’s our baby.”
“You never change Robert,” Daniel laughed to himself.
“Just thought I’d mention it,” He laughed as they quickened their pace.
Robert, Daniel and Kira, arrived at Daniel’s house 40 minutes after leaving the McDonalds. Daniel quickly brought Kira up to her warm room where she laid her down for her nap. He walked down the stairs and into the kitchen where Robert was making some coco.
“Thanks,” Daniel said taking a sip as he sat down at the kitchen table. “I’ve look all over this house and I can’t find Katie and Kelly anywhere.”
“Maybe they went shopping or something,” Robert suggested.
“Couldn’t be,” Daniel frowned into his mug “The car is still out front.”
“Would anyone pick them up?” Robert asked getting curious now.
“Nope,” Daniel sighed “I knew something was wrong, Katie’s purse is still in our room.”
Robert quickly shot up from the chair and ran into the living room, and then Daniel heard Robert stampede up the stairs. He ran frantically back down a few moments later.
“Daniel, Kelly’s purse is missing,” He said shocked “I have to call her cell phone.” He said frantically turning on his phone as he dialed Kelly’s number.
“Robert what?”
Robert held up a hand to silence him as he paced about the room, chewing on his bottom lip. Suddenly he stopped in his tracks as his eyes opened wide. “Katie’s what? Where? Why? When?” Daniel’s heart stopped as those word escaped Robert’s lips. Robert nodded as he shut off the phone. He avoided his friends gaze as he bit it lip trying to decide the best way to tell Daniel.
“Daniel,” Robert said slowly finally looking up at him “Katie, she’s in the hospital, she unconscious and the doctors don’t know what’s wrong.”
