Rose took a seat in a chair that faced the living room. Over the last fifteen minutes everyone who had a watch this month were gathered in Hayden’s living room. The talking stopped when Hayden and Derrick entered the room. Hayden took a seat on the arm of that chair that Rose was sitting in. Derrick took a seat in the chair next to them.
Derrick cleared his throat as Rose looked around. They ranged in ages and sizes. The oldest just turned 35 last week while the youngest was just about fifteen. The tallest person in the bunch was Hayden he stood just less than 6’ 2”. While the shortest, Mr. Benson, was only 5’ tall. Hayden looked down at Rose as Derrick was talking. He smiled and put an arm around her.
“For the third time this month we witnessed these lights. Today we’ll decide if we’ll do anything about it,” Derrick explained.
“Suggestions,” Hayden asked. Everyone looked around at each other.
“Nothing,” Mr. Benson piped up “I say we do nothing. We don’t even know what’s making the lights.”
“You guy’s aren’t getting the point of why we have these watches,” Hayden explained
“Why do we have them then?” The youngest said.
“It’s so we can get out of this place!” Hayden said standing up “Those lights! The one’s you don’t want to do anything about Mr. Benson could very well be our ticket out of this town. They would save us all from living here the rest of our lives!”
The group murmured and whispered. A hush came over the group. Everyone was looking at the subject with new eyes. All eyes were focused on Hayden, who was standing in the middle of the room breathing heavy.
“I set up the watches,” Hayden started calmly “because I didn’t want to lost hope, the hope of leaving this place. Every time you go to your watch, you’re expressing that hope. Are you going to give up now?”
Rose stared at Hayden with amazement. All eyes were on him poised with attention. Hayden never looked like a leader until that moment. Standing in the middle of the room, he was pouring out so much emotion. All the emotion he’s had to deal with for years.
“Now-” Hayden started after a pause “Suggestions!”
“I’ve been thinking about this,” Derrick piped up, all eyes went to him as he spoke “And I say, the next
time someone on watch who sees these lights the next day, a group of people will go out and see if they could possibly find the source.”
“I agree,” Mr. Bode said “Hayden you would be the best candidate to lead that excursion. Would you be willing?”
Rose’s eyes widened in fear as Hayden glanced over at her. He knew he couldn’t say no. Nor would Rose want him to risk his life to save everyone else. Hayden’s eyes flickered back to Mr. Bode. He took a deep breath and swallowed.
“It would be an honor,” Hayden smiled ruefully; he knew he made a mistake. Rose closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm her.
“Wonderful!” Benson said “Now is this meeting over?”
“No!” Hayden shook his head, his eyes flashed as he looked at Mr. Benson. “We need to discuss if we should open the supplies. I know Rose and I are running out.”
“June and I are running out,” Mr. Broad said.
“I’ve been eating snack foods for three days,” The youngest said raising his hand. “My sister refuses to eat another chip.”
“I’m only eating fruit,” Derrick said quietly.
“Okay,” Hayden sighted, he closed his eyes and pictured what was left in the store rooms. “Can everyone
last another two days?”
Everyone nodded and Hayden looked back at Rose who nodded at him “Okay so if we open it in the two day it’ll have been a month and a half since we last opened it,” Hayden said.
“Is that it?” Mr. Benson asked.
“Yes that’s it you can go,” Hayden said quietly.
Everyone stood up and chatted. They all picked up their coats and walked out the door. Rose got up and walked out to the porch and watched everyone walk back to their home. Hayden walked out with Derrick behind him. Hayden stood beside Rose.
“You showed great leader ship skills today,” Derrick said laying a hand on Hayden’s shoulder. “I’m proud and happy you were able to show them you are capable of doing it.”
“Thanks Derrick. I’ll see you in a day or two,” Hayden said.
“Alright good-bye Rose,” Derrick said as he gave Rose a kiss.
Derrick ran off the porch as Hayden and Rose watched him disappear into the horizon. Hayden stood closer to Rose and put his arm around her waist. She rested her head on his chest.
“I’m proud of you too,” Rose said quietly “Derrick’s right you were able to prove you are the leader, even if others don’t want you to be.”
“I sensed Benson doesn’t like me to be the leader. The only one who doesn’t like me to be the appointed leader?” Hayden said staring at the ground.
“Watch out for him,” Rose said “I have a bad feeling about him.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Hayden said kissing her hair.
