I couldn't move and felt a heavy weight on my chest. My head felt like it had been cracked in half and my eyes refused to open. Raising my hand I rubbed my eyes quickly and slowly opened them. The room I was in was dark, the lone window brought in only moonlight. I sat up quickly which I realized was a mistake as the room spun around me. As my eyes adjusted to the moonlight I looked around the room, it was bare besides the essentials: a nightstand with lamp, the bed which I was laying on and a chair that was placed awfully close to the bed. I leaned over to the nightstand and closing my eyes I turned on the light.
It didn't change the room much, the wallpaper was peeling and dark and the rug looked like it hadn't been touched in years. There was only a line of activity leading from the door to the chair. The only bright spot in the room was the comforter which looked hand made. I realized then that I had to have been in the Order Headquarters. Slowly I pushed the blankets off of me and swung my legs over the side of the bed.
My legs were unsteady as I left the room. Someone had pulled on a raggedy stripped sleep set over the period of time I was sleeping and that kept me from getting chilly in the drafty halls of the house. I walked down two flights of stairs before I stepped into what looked like an entrance. The door to the outside was dark and ominous while a picture covered with a blanket beside me snored quietly. Slowly I made it down the stairs, I heard noise to my left which lead down another flight of stairs. It looked like I was heading toward the kitchen. There were lights on and people talking animatedly.
“I want her to stay here,” I heard Harry's voice. It sounded tired and worn out, his voice strained from yelling out spells. “If they can get into Hogwarts no where is safe except here.”
“Harry,” Remus Lupin's voice sounded just as tired “There won't be any one to protect her here. The war has started we're going to need everyone out and trying to save the Ministry from falling.”
“I'll be here,” Victoria's voice was the only one who sounded on the normal side. I laughed quietly; she ran from the battle so of course she wouldn't sound horse. I was glad she was safe, I could foggily remember her running into Ron's arms and disappearing. Then I remembered Draco and my heart leapt where was he? “Draco said they could be after me now.” I could hear the sob in her voice “Some of them must've noticed how he was protecting me. They'll figure it out.”
“Do you really want them here on their own Harry?” Lupin again. Everyone else must be cleaning up after the fight no wonder why the house was so quiet.
“It's not like we're going to burn the place down,” Victoria huffed and I could just picture her pouting and folding her arms across her chest.
“I'm more worried about the fact that Draco would want access to you,” Lupin said simply “Do you really think he's on our side Harry?”
“Yes!” Victoria snapped.
“I would think so,” Harry said more slowly “He risked his life plenty of times for Meagan, Victoria and myself today. I think he can possibly be trusted.”
“Enough to give him the address?”
“I'm not sure,” Harry paused “What do you think Meagan?”
My face felt like it was on fire as I bit my lip and slowly pushed open the cracked door. Harry sat nearest the door facing Lupin to his left while Victoria's back was to the door. He smiled at me. Slowly standing up he walked to the door and wrapped me in a hug. I held him tightly not wanting to let go. I thought today I was lose him and the thought scared me to death still.
“How did you know I was there?” I blushed even more as Harry led me to where he was sitting and placed me lightly in the chair before conjuring another one himself.
“I saw your shadow,” He shrugged “And I heard movement upstairs. Sorry for putting you up so high in the rooms, most of the ones down here have already been claimed. I hope you didn't struggle to get down.”
“No,” I pulled a glass of pumpkin juice toward myself and drained it in one big gulp. My throat never felt better “Though my legs did feel a bit numb.”
“Probably from my bad healing abilities,” Lupin laughed quietly as he leaned back in the chair “I was luckily here when Ron had dropped off Victoria. She only needed a potion or two, but you had a broken shoulder and your face was badly hurt.” I absentmindedly rubbed my face and flinched as I felt the sore wounds “I think the spell I used on your face might've taken effect on your entire body. Sorry.”
“Where is Ron? And Hermione?” I asked remembering slowly that Hermione was the one that brought me here after someone had rescued me. Looking over at Harry I felt tears in my eyes as I smiled. Grabbing my hand he squeezed it lightly.
“They're upstairs sleeping.” Harry sighed “We should all get some sleep. It's been a long day.”
“What about Draco? Isn't he going to be allowed?” Victoria started but Lupin held up a hand to silence her.
“I think we'll discuss that when we have more members around Ms. Witting. This is Harry's house but it's still Headquarters, not everyone would like to have a Death Eater running around here.”
Victoria huffed as she folded her arms across her chest before running out of the room. I could hear her move quickly up the stairs. I watched Lupin blink a few times before shaking his head and muttering a word that sounded an awful lot like “teenagers” before waving to us and leaving the kitchen. As the door shut behind him Harry bolted out of his chair and gripped me tightly around the waist. It was an awkward hug as I was still in the chair but I slid out and into his lap holding him tightly.
“Are you hungry?” Harry asked letting go of me after a few minutes.
“No,” I cupped his face and ran my fingers through his hair. He looked tired and old. I frowned kissing him lightly “You should go to bed.”
“No,no I want to be with you. I'm fine,” I shook my head and pulled him up off of the floor. My legs had at least started to feel normal “I'll stay up with you.”
“How about we go to bed together?”
“You sure?” He asked worriedly
“Honestly, I don't think I would be able to sleep alone now that I'm not unconscious,” I said quietly.
“There's no reason to be scared,” He gripped my hands tightly and squeezed them reassuringly “No one can get you here.”
“I know,” My voice quavered “It's just I don't know what my dreams will be like. And you make me feel safe. I don't feel safe anymore.”
“No one can get you,” Harry repeated hugging me tightly he kissed the top of my head.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I couldn't sleep, every noise outside of the house made me jump out of my skin and every creek outside the door made me curl into Harry. It was hard to tell if Harry was humoring me by staying up with me or if he was just as jumpy as I was. He held my close with his arm wrapped around me as I lay with my head on his chest. Occasionally I would feel him running his fingers through my hair or kissing the top of my head as a way of calming me down. We didn't talk after we came up here from the kitchen, I couldn't trust my voice anymore. The mere thought of the Hogwarts attack sent tears into my eyes which I tried to hide as much as I could from Harry.
“How are you feeling?” Harry asked quietly as the sun started to rise. His voice was just as rough as the night before—he stayed up the entire night with me. “You at least stopped crying”
“I was trying to hide that from you,” I blushed into his sleep shirt as his quiet laugh rumbled his chest.
“It's a bit hard to ignore when suddenly my shirt becomes wet,” He said simply. “There's no need to hide it, you had a rough day yesterday.”
“And that's over now,” I said sitting up shifting my legs under me I turned to Harry as he leaned casually against his pillows.
“It is,” He smiled as he cupped my cheek his green eyes searching my face “But what's wrong?”
“There's something I can't place,” I bit my lip as I took his hand from my face and held it.
“Oh what's that?”
“How did I get here?” I asked slowly. I remembered being picked up and a voice telling Hermione to take me, but I couldn't place the voice. The arms were strong as they carried me and felt familiar. I watched Harry slowly, sighing he sat up and pulled me close.
“You understand that I tried my best to do everything for you yesterday,” He tucked my head under his chin as he rubbed my shoulders. “And that everything I did was to make sure you got here safely and out of harms way. I tried--”
“Harry?” My heart leapt into my throat, and my mind began to whirl.
“I couldn't get to you,” His voice cracked as I felt him take a rattling breath. His limbs shook a little almost as if he was reliving the moment “I tried, God knows I tried. I saw that Death Eater running toward you and his spell hitting you. I couldn't do anything, I was locked in a duel. I—I thought I was going to lose you forever he was so close to you!” Harry paused as he held me tighter, I laced my fingers through his and kissed his hand. “It was Malfoy. He saved you. Stunning the Death Eater and running you to Hermione.”
It felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest. I slid away from Harry and curled up pulling my knees to my chin. It was Harry, my mind was telling me as those strong arms picked me up and carried me to safety. I had called him Harry, the memory returned to me with a sick feeling rising in my stomach. Draco openly risked his life for me, he would be hunted just as much as us. I felt Harry's hands on my shoulders as he sat behind me.
“You have to believe me I tried,” He said quietly. And I believed him, emotion wracked his voice as he kept whispering to me.
“I—it's okay,” I closed my eyes and leaned back against him. There was nothing he could do, and it was up to Draco. I tried to block out the thought of how close to death I really was. Quickly I turned around in Harry's arms and kissed him fiercely. He slowly pulled me down on top of himself as I situated myself the best I could. Kissing me slowly Harry reached for the bottom of my shirt before stopping.
“Are you sure?” He cocked his head to the side as he searched my face. All I could do was grin at him and return to kissing him. Adrenaline ran threw my veins and my body was screaming at all of the attention. This was the perfect moment.
A piercing scream echoed throughout the house as my heart ran rapidly, the house was breached and we were dead. Tears sprang into my eyes as I looked down at Harry to see his reaction but he just smiled and wiped the tears away. “It's Mrs Black's portrait,” I frowned confused and Harry just smiled broader “The one in the hall you saw covered up? We haven't been able to remove her she doesn't like us being here.”
“Oh,” I laughed quietly shaking my head “Well at least we won't be disturbed.”
“Or heard,” Harry pulled me back down and kissed me. I could hear activity outside the room which sounded like the stampeding of feet but I didn't care.
“DRACO!”
Victoria's scream reached Harry's room loud and clear. Harry and I stopped and I could feel the color drain out of my face. The meeting hadn't happened yet to see if Draco would be allowed in, which meant something much worse had happened. Without caring how I looked, I scrambled off of the bed, flinging the door open I ran down the stairs as fast as my still unstable legs would carry me.
The commotion was still in entrance hall as I reached the bottom landing. I could just make out blonde hair under Hermione's arm as a group of Order Members gathered around him. The room seemed to spin around me as I walked down the stairs. It was hard to take in everything at once as members frantically tried to figure out what to do. I could hear a few of them saying that they should leave him to die, a whimper sounded from the corner of the room. Turning I saw Victoria staring wide eyed at the group of people with tears streaming down from her eyes, her mouth opened in a horrified silent scream. Slowly I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her.
“He's dead Meagan!” She sobbed “I just know it! They aren't going to let him live.”
“Shhh, they aren't going to let him die.” I swallowed hard hoping that was the case “He saved us yesterday. They're going to save him.”
Victoria went quiet in my arms as we both watched the scene unfold. They tried their best to block Draco from us but I could see blood covering his clothing. Things seemed to move in slow motion before anyone decided to do anything with him.
“Bring him upstairs,” Harry's voice was steady. Everyone turned to stare at him, a few people's mouths opened to protest “He's with us now.”
This time everyone moved quickly as a few of the strongest members slowly picked up Draco and carried him up the stairs. Victoria dislodged herself from my embrace and run up the stairs after them. I sat in the corner stunned, staring at the spot in the hall were Draco's body had just lain. I couldn't remove my eyes from the hall rug until Harry stood before me. Slowly I looked up at him-- he was still in his pajamas looking ruffled. He crouched down in front of me and grabbed my hands.
“He's going to be okay,” He said forcefully—I could see him trying not to wince at the reassurance that his rival would be okay. “We've got good healers here.”
“I shouldn't care,” I said shrugging. But I can't help it, rang in my head as I wrapped my arms around Harry's neck. Burying my face in his shoulder he held me tightly.
“I understand that you do,” Harry said after a few minutes of silence “As much as I hate it, he was—is a part of your life. I just have to live with that, and be happy that you chose me and not him.”
“Yeah,” Struggled past my lips as I tightened my grip in Harry's hair. “I chose you, that's all that matters.”
Tears sprang to my eyes as I bit my lip to hold back anything that would've slipped. I had chosen Harry. I want to be with him. I pushed Draco away for his own good. That kiss yesterday was out of desperation from the both of us. Our lives were at risk, and it felt like a good bye kiss more than anything. Closing my eyes I sighed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was night before Victoria left Draco's bedside forced by Mrs Weasley to get some sleep as she would be no use to help him in the morning. I crept out of my room and down the hall toward Draco's room. He hadn't woken up yet but the healers had done all they could for now, but I had to see him—talk to him. Even if I wasn't going to get any answers. The door opened easily and without noise. The room was in a foggy glow as a few candles were lit on the dresser. I walked to his bed and sat down in the empty chair. Reaching for his hand I kissed it lightly.
“Oh Draco,” I sighed onto the back of his hand “This is all because of me. They saw you yesterday saving me, taking me to Hermione. You stupid git. Why would you risk yourself? You should've let the Death Eaters get me. I wasn't worth it.” Closing my eyes I rested my forehead on his hand. If he didn't get better I didn't know if I would be able to forgive myself for this.
“Of course you're worth it.” Draco's voice said quietly.
Quickly I dropped his hand and pushed the chair away from the bed. He was awake, and someone had to be told. I felt Draco's hand wrap around my wrist as he pulled me down onto the bed. Biting my lip to try to hold back the tears as I stared at the wall, I couldn't look at him. I didn't believe him, he was going to hate me for the rest of his life. Which he should, it would work out. He would be able to be with Victoria and I could be with Harry. Maybe it was for the best.
“Don't say that,” I said slowly. “You could've been dead because of me. Do you think Victoria would've forgiven me for that—do you think I would forgive myself?”
“It was my choice,” Draco said plainly “Look at me,please.”
“It would be better if I didn't.”
“For who you or me?”
“Me,” I laughed quietly and turned around. There wasn't much light in the room but I could see his gray eyes in the light of the moon. “I didn't want to see you hate me.”
“There's not enough light in the room,” A smile crept across Draco's face. “And I don't hate you. I made my choice, I helped you. I couldn't not help you seeing you falling down the hill, I thought you were dead--” I put my hand over his mouth to stop him. I couldn't listen to it again.
“You're alright, that's what matters,” I smiled weakly. “Victoria was here all day with you. She was really worried about you, she really loves you.”
“I know, but she shouldn't be involved in this.”
“She's in it for the long haul,” Draco was silent for a few minutes. I looked at him carefully trying to figure out what he was thinking.
“I love you, Meagan. You chose Harry, I understand that, but you have to know that.”
I let out little sob as I leaned over and kissed Draco. I pulled the covers away from him and kicked off my shoes.
“What are you doing?” Draco asked moving over as I climbed onto the bed.
“The nightmares don't go away by themselves,” I pulled the covers over us as Draco wrapped his arms around me pulling me into his side. Closing my eyes I smiled into Draco's shoulder, I knew that no matter how hard I tried to deny it it was true that I loved Draco.
